Search within a topic
On this page
Searching within a topic runs your words inside one subject only. A search for bullpen inside Baseball brings back baseball coverage, not office furniture or anything else the word can mean.
#Ways to start
- From a topic's page: select Search within this topic, then type your words. See A topic's page.
- From the Topics list: type your words in the search box first, then select a topic in the list on the left. Your words are searched inside it.
- From the Topics tab: type your words, then select Search “...” here on the topic that fits. See The Topics tab.
- From News results: on the first page of a News search, the Search within a topic box suggests up to four topics that fit your words, and Your topics lists the topics you follow. Select one to run the same search inside it.
On a News search for heat pump: topics that fit the words, and the topics you follow.
- 1Topics that fit your search
- 2Select one to run the same search inside it
- 3Your followed topics
- 4One of them
#How you can tell
When a search runs inside a topic, a Searching: label above the search box names it by its address, such as /sports/baseball/, and the results come from that topic only.
A search for bullpen inside Baseball.
- 1The topic this search runs in
- 2Your words
- 3Results from inside the topic
The topic stays with you: a new search from that box, and the other tabs such as All, Images or Videos, keep it. Your filters, such as the date range, still apply on top.
#Leave the topic
- Select All at the top of the Topics list to go back to the News with no topic.
- Or start from the home page, the Topics tab or a fresh search on another page.
#Common questions
Why does the Searching label show an address rather than a name?
It names the topic the way the site addresses it, from its main topic down, such as /sports/baseball/. The name in the Topics list and on the topic's page is the same topic.
Can I search in two topics at once?
Not from the page's buttons and lists, which choose one topic at a time. For a wider net, search in the broader topic one level up the trail.
Does the Web tab use the topic?
Web results come from outside 4Search's own news index and are not limited by topics. When you select a topic with words in the box on the Web or Shopping tab, the search runs on News, where topics apply.
